Sad Day on the Ranch

Well, everyone who follows via FB knows but now I’m just here to vent.

I lost one of my chickens today because of our heat-wave and I’ve got another one resting in the house trying to recover.

It hit 115 here today and my two smallest chickies took the brunt of it.  I am honestly not sure which one died, or which one is inside the house with me right now. (I can only identify 2 of the 7 chicks by color markers, the other 5, well, 4 now, look identical.)

I had to wedge myself into the coop door to get her, she was out of reach from both the big gate and the coop/hutch door.

I brought her outside to the chicken run where it was slightly cooler and a little more wind going and let cool a little bit outside before bringing her in (the sun was just going down.) It still about 104 outside but I needed her to cool down a little more slowly.

Our AC had kicked off (the house was 100 degrees inside) (we have a bad AC unit) and the house was about 85 when I brought her in.

She’s next to the floor vent right now, at about 80 degrees, and she’s drinking water on her own now, pruning herself and she’s shifting (She’s too weak to stand) but she is trying….

Ray’s at the store getting shade cloth for the sides of the hutch, just too much sun getting in and not enough shade. The chicks retreated to the coop to get out of the sun but the coop was hotter.

They also might be a little bit egg-bound right now which might have caused some complications.

The other 4 were running around just fine and were treated to some fridge cold watermelon, they went to town on it.

I’m gonna be waking up frequently tonight to check on our little trooper and make sure she’s doing better….

I’m thankful to be watching her cuz I think otherwise I’d be a wreck about the other chicken. I have had them since they were 2 weeks old.

Bah, it’s just a leaky pipe, sure we can fix it…. uh oh…

The joys of home ownership. :)   We had a cracked faucet that broke due to our weird freezes this year. We have been trying to find time to tackle it together and due to some insomnia today, we had that chance.

We turned the water off at the road (well, mostly, it’s still got a little pressure which is causing issues) and went to tackle the pipe. The idea was to move the pipe slightly away from the cement wall it was attached to so we could get the pipe wrench around it and unscrew the nozzle that cracked. As soon as Ray moved the pipe from the wall, the pipe fitting broke…. UNDER GROUND…

There’s too much PVC glue so we can’t get the fittings unscrewed.  Ray’s on hopefully his last trip to Home Depot, we had to cut off the pipe below the elbow and we’re going to have to get a new elbow joint, put that on the pipe, and then cap the elbow.  Hopefully we can get it sealed, the issue is that there’s still water pressure and stopping it completely requires other tools. Worse comes to worse, I know what we need but hoping we can avoid that.

So as you can see, it’s a little muddy. On the positive side, due to the leak being so bad, it was very easy for Ray to dig down to it. Usually you can’t dig into the ground unless you’ve got a breaker bar and some major tools due to the Arizona hard ground…

We have no water right now. Thank god we irrigated and it rained because we’ve been using the puddles and water from the horse trough to get the mud off of Ray. (Bless his heart, I haven’t gotten any mud on me because he’s doing all the hard work.)

Holy Overflow Batman!

It’s irrigation time!  We don’t irrigate often in the winter here but come mid-February, it’s already spring time for us here in Arizona and it’s time to heavily water the fields.  Sometimes we get “meh” for water, most times we get just enough, and every once in awhile, THIS HAPPENS.. OH NO!!!!!!

The field to the right was the only one that was supposed to get water. Not only did our two farther fields (not shown) get some, but the ditch did too, from the corner…..

down to the street, both sides…

I’m so disappointed. Not only did we miss an opportunity of a strong pump flow that could have watered all 3 of our fields, but we lost a ton of water to the ditch. :(

Our irrigation was scheduled at 6am this morning, so Ray had to get up to make sure the gates were open and then go back to bed. We’ve never ever had water flow this hard and fast, so it’s usually a waste to just sit there and watch it.  There’s not much that could have been done to prevent it, usually our 3 hours of irrigation is just enough for the field. I don’t even know how we ended up with so much water.

I came home at 9:15, right on time for the water gates to be closed in case any neighbors forgot and the gates were already closed off for us. I think our neighbor got water too that he wasn’t anticipating because he had some standing water in his yard but not enough to indicate he’d asked for it.

The far fields did get some at least, not the lake we usually have per field but at least a little to help green it up.

Did it snow inside my office?

Okay, so everyone who’s been following along probably knows that right now, the chickies are in a second bedroom that I use as my office, as we prep them for going out into the weather. I use diatomaceous earth as a drying agent to keep the chicky bunker from smelling and keep mites/bugs/etc away.

I walked into the room, and everything, (and I mean everything) is covered in a thin white layer of diatomaceous earth. Chickies kicked their bedding up last night like crazy and it spread it everywhere. I have no idea how I’m going to clean this room up right. It might never be the same again!
SO— DE goes OUTSIDE for chickies… if you ever use it, just remember that!!!

It is entirely possible to set a grill on fire….

I’m not sure exactly how or what happened, but we were grilling out tonight and the whole top half of the grill went up in flames.  We bought it last March, and it’s not exactly a cheap grill either… it was a double side, grill on one side, smoker on the other, with a stove burner as well…

Ray had a work emergency and asked me to go flip the meat on the grill. I went out and as I was walking out, I thought “Wow, that seems kinda bright over there… As soon as I rounded the corner to where the grill was I could see what was happening.

I was able to reach the dials to turn it off.  I ran back into the house and looked at Ray and said “Your work emergency is going to have to wait, we have a bigger one… your grill is on fire.”  He thought I meant a little grease spittle throwing flames…  once he got out there, let’s just say some obscenities flew through the air out at the ol’ ranch.

Mom said “You walked in that door and the look on your face was just… stunned…” (mine.)

All I can say is this.. I am SO glad that we moved the grill from the side of the house to out under the shade structure up against a brick wall, and on cement…

We went to Serrano’s and had Mexican food.
