Cool things to do with old tires

This weekend I am snagging up some old tires and starting my tire garden, so I thought I’d do some searches for inspiration.

I’m borrowing some images from the net out there to show cool things you can do with tires, with links back to their originating sites. I hope this inspires someone today…. (*cough cough, Chicky Readers, cough cough!*).

So… painting the tires. There’s a lot of really cool things you can do with tire gardens to make them look better… (and as an added bonus, get the paint from the OOPS section of Home Depot and Walmart paint department cheap!!!)

You can grow pretty much anything in tires (yes, including food, there’s a ton of research out there on if any toxins can leech into the soil and the general scientific consensus is it’s safe and that the tires are inert). Even if they did a little, it’s probably 99% less than the pesticides and herbicide crap covering what we get at the store not to mention modifications that have been made to them to grow them faster….  I cannot wait to have real fresh tomatoes again, not the crap from the grocery stores.

Oh those blasted packing peanuts….

DO NOT FLUSH!

Just a very quick word about those annoying packing peanuts that have probably been showing up at your door throughout the holiday season.

First of all, there are 2 types of packing peanuts. Polystyrene (non-biodegradeable) and Cornstarch (biodegradeable) peanuts. One’s good… One’s bad… guess which is which….

Many UPS Stores, Mailboxes Etc., PostNet, and other small packing and shipping centers will accept your peanuts to reuse. Find the closest one to you and see if they take them. If not, try another till you find someone. Keep ‘em out of the dump!

Packing peanuts never break down unless they are specifically made of biodegradable material. (If you want to test this, hold one under running water and see if it breaks down. If it does, it’s biodegradable but this does not mean you can flush them down the toilet! They’ll clog up the pipes!!

Take them outside and break them down with water from the hose in your composting area. Hosing them down will speed up the process and keep them from drifting away with the wind and ticking your neighbors off.

For future reference, if you need packing peanuts to ship something, ask for Cornstarch Peanuts! You can buy them at UHauls and sometimes Barnes and Noble will give them to you if you ask for them!
